Cannabis Oil is Extracted From the Cannabis Plant.
Oil, or resin, from Cannabis is made into hash oil, co2 oil, butters, tinctures, salves, lotions, edibles and more.
Concentrated Cannabis Oil comes primarily as:
- CO2 Oil – High Quality and clean oil that’s used in food and direct applicaitons. CO2 is used to extract plant oil.
- Rick Simpson Oil – RSO – Cannabis oil extracted using Alcohol
- Cannabis Tincture – Oil extracted and diluted in solvent – alcohol or glycerin
- Butane Hash Oil – Cannabis oil extracted using butane
- Oil Based Extractions – Cannabis Oil extracted with other other oils like butter or coconut oil. Used in cannabis edibles.
- Cannabis Rosin Oil – Pure oil(tricrome heads) pressed from fresh frozen or dry flowers or cold water bubble hash.
*Hemp Oil – Oil pressed from hemp Seeds

CO2 oil is very pure and safe way to make cannabis oil.
Decaffeinated coffee and vanilla extract is made this way.
It does however require a Supercritical machine, which is expensive like it sounds, $50k+.
The CO2 extractions are commonly refined in to oil for cannabis vape pens or to be consumed orally as a paste or in an edible cannabis medication.
In the oil extraction machine, liquid CO2 is heated in a pressure cell until it reaches the critical point were it changes into a supercritical fluid.
Super Critical Fluids will pass through solids like a gas, yet also dissolve matter like a liquid.
Super critical extraction is a more precise extraction.
Also, depending on cannabis strain and part of the plant that is used, can be higher in the various cannabinoids.
CO2 Extract oil is very potent. When flowers and trim is used, the CO2 Oil has a high THC%.
This oil extraction method is being used more and more for cannabis oil, especially CBD oils.
Stems, leaves and seeds will produce potent extracts with other healing cannabinoids, that aren’t psychoactive.
Using concentrated CBD won’t get you high, but energy and serenity is known to come. High doses of CBD have stopped cancer and unrelenting pain along with other ailments that pharmaceuticals fail to help with.
Co2 Cannabis oil is becoming the go-to choice for medicinal edible cannabis. It’s clean pure extract is perfect for food.
Because of the rising popularity of CBD in medical and health circles, super critical machines and co2 oil is in high demand. It’s a universal extraction that’s high quality and can be tailored for a variety of needs.
“You only need a drop the size of a grain of rice”
RSO, or Rick Simpson’s oil, has claims of extraordinary healing.
This cannabis oil is used for terminal illness diseases like cancer and has also been effective in treating depression where pharmaceuticals fail.
RSO is mainly an alcohol extraction, Re-introduced by Rick Simpson.
It would be near impossible to ingest enough healing cannabinoids in smoking, so this oil concentrate offers a way to get more healing benefit from the plant.
This oil is easy and cheap to make, so it’s more accessible to people.
Cannabis oil from leaves(trim mainly) and flowers will result in very strong psychoactive and healing effects.
The Dosage for cancer is said to be 60 grams over a 90 day period.
An ounce or about 30 grams of good bud will usually produce 4 to 5 grams of high-grade oil.
Example Solvent’s used are
- pure light aliphatic naphtha
- 99% isopropyl alcohol
Here’s a Demonstration and recipe on how to make oil from Rick Simpson Himself.
Basically you mash in cannabis with the solvent(alcohol) and do a series of washes . The solvent will remove the oil from the plant matter.
Strain the plant material, then you are left with oil and solvent.
The solvent will be boiled off and one is left with a tar paste, RSO cannabis oil!
-I’m not advocating this, nor is this a complete instruction how to do this. It’s a basic overview to help educate you on the process.
Following Rick’s original recipe is required to insure full Decarboxylation, where the cannabinoids have reached peak potency.
Rick says to use high quality bud for serious conditions. You can make oil from stems and leaf, but it is said not to be as potent and better used to treat skin conditions.
Cannabis oil also comes in a tincture form. It’s easy to make with alcohol or glycerine.
In fact, it’s one of common medical marijuana preparations from the early 1900’s
These tinctures can be Very potent, depending on the quantity taken and parts of the plant that are used.
It’s best to heat the cannabis for decarboxylation (release the medicine) it before adding the alcohol solvent.
Then place in a jar with alcohol.
There is no heat used, like RSO, as it’s not making an oil but more of a alcohol/oil mix.
Place in a cool dark place and shake frequently. It’s been said extraction is complete anywhere from 3 hours to 4 weeks.
Where to buy: Alcohol based cannabis tinctures are available at local dispensaries.
It’s in a gray area with federal law because of the solvent extraction. However, it’s a very easy way to turn cannabis into medicine and has been happening since plant extractions have begun.
Dosages vary, so follow directions and start slow.
Place under tongue and let absorb into saliva, or mix with tea or drink.
If the alcohol is harsh, then place in a cup of warm water or tea to reduce the alcohol taste.
Glycerin Based Cannabis Tinctures
Cannabis or THC tinctures can also be made from vegetable Glycerin. It has a sweet flavor, and melds really well with cannabis extract.
In other words, it tastes great.
It’s the same potency results of the alcohol based tincture extractions…so more buds will produce a stronger thc tincture.
These tinctures are psychoactive unless made from high CBD strains or leaves and stems.
Here’s an instruction sheet on how to make a glycerin tincture to extract cannabis oil.
Contrary to name, butane hash oil isn’t made from hash.
BHO is made from trim and sometimes buds.
Honey oil, this is highly concentrated and pure.
This oil is such high demand and it attracts such a wide array of production methods.
Operations can be made from home depot and the local smoke shop. On the other end of the spectrum, this oil is made in labs, with $7,000 Extraction Machines and medical grade butane.
The end product is a highly concentrated goo of cannabinoids, or cannabis oil that people love to dab.
The hash oil requires Butane to make, which is highly combustible, so extreme caution must be used…learn from mistakes.
The technology for this is developing along with the art of making it.
Some oils are fetching $100 a gram, and they are almost clear.
People who smoke cannabis frequently like bho because of the greater effects per amount of smoke consumed.
BHO is not edible, and is only smoked.
Coconut oil, olive oil, butter, margin and other oils can be used to extract the cannabis oil from plant material.
These are often used in brownies, cookies and other edibles.
Salves and balms are also made from oil based cannabis extractions.
Oil and Cannabis are mixed and heated between 200 and 250 F* for a number of hours.
This is done to activate the healing cannabinoids(decarboxylation).
The base oil will extract the cannabis oil from the plant material.
If buds are used, the oil will be more potent. Also, if the strength will depend on the amount of oil to material ratio.
Cannabis Oil is from the entire plant. Oil from flowers, seeds, stalks and leaves. The oil extracted from the seeds is often referred to as hemp oil
Hemp oil is not psychoactive, nor is it a strong medicine. It’s available across the United states and is legal.
Hemp oil is used for healthy skin, and is a great oil for nutrition.
The hemp seeds have a high concentration of oil which has an endless demand in inks, paints, lubricants, plastics, wicks, soaps and food.
Why use it for paint, it’s such a great food.
The human body is best suited for hemp oils. The 3:1 ratio of the omega essential fatty acids in hemp seed oil are the exact ratios our bodies like!.
Our bodies require a continual supply of fatty acids, and the oil from hemp seed oil fits the bill perfectly thanks to hemp seed oil’s 3:1 Ratio of omega 6 and 3.
Hemp oil is made after harvesting and pressing the cannabis seeds. Cold pressing keeps the nutrients.
Check some out at your local store and replace salad dressing and olive oil with one of nature’s gifts.
Cannabis Rosin Oil
Cannabis Rosin oil or “rosin” is the purified trichomes from the buds and leaves.
It’s extracted through heat and pressure. Rosin Oil is the way of the future. So pure, no chemicals or solvents, and easy.
Legality – There is a lot of grey area with cannabis oil at the moment.
Oil extracts from seed, stems and leaves appear to have a green light under hemp oil.
Will Cannabis oil cause a negative result on a drug test?
The tests are for THC, so stay away from flower based oils.
Concentrated CBD from stalks, seeds and leaves is low in THC.
Double check with the manufacturer of the product to see what they say.
Oil from cannabis has been used legally and illegally for centuries. These oil concentrations of the plant have a wide range of health benefits.
Not all cannabis oil is psychoactive. For instance, hemp oil and cbd concentrates from stem and leafs will not have any immediate mental effects.
Serious medical conditions would not be able be able to be healed with cannabis by smoking or ingesting plant matter.
That’s the driving force behind the renegade and pioneering quest to get pure and specific extractions for those in need.
Against forces of mis-guided and antiquated laws and enforcement systems, cannabis oil produces have met the demand by mavericks looking to heal from cancer, chronic pain and crippling depression.
Smoking buds and flowers also builds a tolerance, so the extract oil concentrate has also been driven by those looking to deliver more medicine with less smoke.
CBD Oil is proving to be more and more effective as a medicinal oil and supplement. , and as experimentation produces additional success stories, it’s a safe bet CBD strains and concentrated oils are going to see extraordinary demand.
CBD preparations are extracted from stem, leaf and seed, or a high CBD strain.
